Information for Classes Ireland, Wales & Australia

This is our Year Five blog, to let you know all that we have planned for the year.  You can link to, and read details of, all forthcoming events and upcoming activities opposite, or by following us on Twitter or Facebook. 

Welcome to Year Five. Mrs Bee, Miss Holland and Mr Mawer are our class teachers.  Mr Clarke will teach P.E. in the afternoon. We are sure it is going to be a great year for year 5. It’s going to be a busy, but exciting time for us all, so we are really looking forward to the important year ahead!

Autumn Term

Our Autumn 1 topic is called Escape from Pompeii which is linked to geography and history. We will explore map work and human geography by comparing the UK to other countries around the world. Our reading and writing will be focused on this topic, looking at a unit based on a setting description before and after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius as well as a newspaper report, and an explanation text about rocks linked to science. In maths we will make sure you are confident in your year four learning, looking at the key objectives, from maths in year four, in morning maths as well as learning lots of new skills linked to fractions, decimals and percentages, so those time tables will be very important. In art and design, we will look at, Roman pottery and will be creating our own Roman style pots.  In computing, we will develop our coding skills and further explore online safety. In science, we will find out about ‘Rocks” which links well with our geography work on volcanoes. Our R.E. topic for the term is ‘Inspirational People’ looking at a range of leaders and tying in to our work for Black History Month.

Autumn 2 focuses on Earth in Space and see use designing rockets in DT and exploring the solar system. We will also be writing a non-chronological report linked to space and letters to inspirational people from our RE work.

Spring Term

Spring Term work is focused around invaders and settlers, especially the Vikings and Saxons.  We will be building our own Viking long ships in DT (hopefully not to scale!) and in geography exploring the varying countries which make up Scandinavia.  In English lessons we base lots of our writing around the things we learn about in history and linking our work to the Viking sagas. Many of our reading activities will also build upon our historical knowledge looking at fiction, non-fiction and poetry. In maths, we cover a range of topics including division, shape, data handling and algebra. 

Our art work will be inspired by the night sky. In computing, we will learn to produce spreadsheets and in music we will take part in a unit called, ‘Life cycles’ which links to our science topic.  We will also be going to Willersly Castle for our residential.

Summer Term

Our Summer science topic is based around Forces and Sound; we will explore how Our geography topic will see us looking at ‘Mountains’ and studying locational and place knowledge alongside human and physical geography. There is lots to do in maths, we will be learning: number, ordering and estimation, calculations, multiplication of decimals, ratio and proportion, scale factor of shapes, algebra, formulae, measures, formulae for area and volume of shapes, geometry, building 3D shapes (nets), statistics and interpreting pie charts and line graphs. In English, we will participate in discussions, presentations, as link our work to our history topic of local history. In art, we will look at ‘Mountains’ studying Japanese painting and producing our own creative work, exploring our own ideas and recording our experiences. Our RE topic will be exploring ‘Beliefs in Action” where we will discover and explore what Jewish people, Humanists, Hindus and Christians teach about how we can all live together for the wellbeing of each other. In computing, we will be looking at creating games including designing, writing and debugging programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solving problems by decomposing them into smaller parts and using logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work.
