Year 4 have had another very busy day today. This time we visited the Materials Recovery Facility in Forest Town.
We were met by Lesley the education officer who introduced us to how and what to recycle. She set us a challenge to sort a bag of “rubbish” into recycling, compost, charity bag and general waste. There were a few things that we found tricky: taking the tops off plastic bottles and aerosols, the difference between shiny paper that can’t be recycled and wrapping paper which can, as well as margarine tubs that could be recycled and their lids which couldn’t.
Once we’d learnt about which items went where we had a tour of the actual MRF and got to see all of the machines in action. We wore hi-wiz jackets, a head set so that we could hear Lesley and a hard hat. We looked really smart in our outfits. The MRF was fascinating, there were lots of very expensive pieces of machinery to look at and we got to watch paper being loaded on to lorries to be taken to be recycled. It was quite noisy so the head sets were really useful.
Our next challenge will be to write letters of thanks to Lesley and the team.
